Passport Information

The first step in planning a trip outside the United States is obtaining a U.S. passport. To avoid increased fees of an expedited passport service, be sure to submit your application in a timely manner.

First-time applicants:

You must apply in person at an authorized Passport Application Acceptance Facility or Passport Agency if:

  • You are applying for your first U.S. passport; or
  • You are under age 16; or
  • Your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16; or
  • Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged; or
  • Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago; or
  • Your name has changed since your U.S. passport was issued and you are unable to legally document your name change.

Required documents for first-time applicants:

  • Two identical 2x2-inch passport photos, Passport photos are available at any AAA Travel branch: $8 plus tax to members, $15 plus tax to non-members.1
  • Completed passport application DS-11: Application For a U.S. Passport1
  • Submit evidence of U.S. Citizenship
    • Previously issued, undamaged, and fully valid U.S. passport (5 year for minors or 10 years for adults)
    • Certified U.S. birth certificate (must meet all of the following requirements):
      • Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
      • Lists bearer's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
      • Lists parent(s) full names
      • Has date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
      • Has registrar's signature
      • Has embossed, impressed, or multicolored seal of registrar
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
  • Naturalization Certificate
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Proof of identity
    • Previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport
    • Naturalization Certificate
    • Valid Driver License
    • Current Government ID (city, state or federal)
    • Current Military ID (military and dependents)
  • Submit a photocopy of the identification document(s) presented
  • Pay the applicable fee

Expedited requests:

You can request expedited service by mail or apply in person. Generally, you will receive your passport in three weeks, or sooner, if you can show an urgent need. Expedited service will cost an additional fee, plus any delivery costs.

Passport renewal:

Your expired or soon-to-expire U.S passport can be renewed by mail if it:

  • Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application;
  • Was issued when you were age 16 or older;
  • Was issued within the last 15 years; and
  • original or certified copy

If any of the above statements do not apply to you, you must apply in person.

Submit a U.S. Passport Application by mail:

  1. Fill Out Form DS-82: Application For A U.S. Passport by Mail
  2. Submit your most recent U.S. passport book and/or card
  3. Submit a certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order if your name has changed
  4. Pay the applicable fee
  5. Provide one passport photo
  6. Mail application

Please note that submitting incorrect passport fees can delay the processing of an application.
